Minimal Swimwear

Minimal SwimwearJust starting sewing / serging with lycra ... advice or pointers?

I have experience in sewing, but I've never sewn before lycra. I bought yards and yards of colorful lycra in the hope of making my sketches in color, beautiful swimsuits. I wonder if I have to use a sewing machine, serger or both. I ball single and double needles to use for my sewing machine. I will take a course this fall serger to learn various techniques, since I have little experience on a (used sewing machine with lots).
Who here has sewn bathing suits? Sew or Serge? Do I need a different foot or anything (hands)? Things to keep in mind? Please help! I know it's a challenge, but I am very determined to learn!

If it matters, I have an old Kenmore 30 Sewing Machine Elna and a serger.

Will attend a lot ..

I do not have a serger when I sewed my first swimsuit several (extensible monitoring and sewn carefully, though), and I did very well with the machine rather primitive set-up that I had. Maybe if I had to do another now, I would use the serger, but I suspect I would use the machine regularly to get everything in place, then Serge on all this (my biggest fear is being in serging of Running on a spindle and destroy my blades I am a good deal of precision anchorage when I'm sewing a swimsuit).

A tip is: when you cut your fabric, lay on a table so that none of this weighs on the side and stretches. In fact, you might want to lay out and let it sit overnight before cutting.

Also, make sure your scissors are sharp before cutting. Always make slinky seams with an average length needles or narrow zigzag stitch double.

Serge, if possible is my recommendation - the differential feed will keep you from going crazy with seams that want to either tender or a contract under construction. Coverstitch is useful for an elastic, but can be lived without. If you use needles Schmetz, try universal ball and stretch - react differently with different mesh the various points of needles.

Remember that chlorine and bromine eat the devil from tissues, so that all proceedings in the pool must be made of chlorine / bromine resistant and elastic tissue. Costumes will last longer if they are made of two layers of outer fabric, rather than the outside fabric and lining.
