Winter is almost over. The warm weather is here. The beaches are calling. And answer the call, is that fabulous piece of cute women's clothing known as the bikini. Since the time of its inception in the 1950s to today, the bikini is the weirdest word in all languages spoken on the globe.

The history of the bikini started well before the official presentation of the swimsuit in the summer of 1946. We had to wait until that memorable year of 1946 before it can bear the name "bikini". Some historians believe the two piece bathing suit may have been one of the first public swimming costumes in existence. Drawing evidence from 300 AD Roman mosaics, historians point to this as the swimsuit of choice for Roman women.

Where does the name "bikini" come from? It all started with (you guessed it) just after the Second World War.

Bikini Atoll is located in the central Pacific. It is one of 29 atolls and five islands that form the unique Republic of the Marshall Islands. Bikini is perhaps best known for his role in a series of nuclear tests conducted by the United States in the 1940s and 1950s.

Just before the Second World War, Bikini suddenly became strategic. Bikini Islanders living 'peaceful harmony has an abrupt close when the Japanese decided to fortify the Bikini Atoll to guard against a U.S. invasion of the Marshalls. Throughout the conflict the Bikini station was an outpost for the Japanese military headquarters in the Marshall Islands,

However, Bikini has become a bastion of calm in which the Japanese garrison had spent the war picking flowers. American naval strategy submarines and aircraft carriers to jump on these islands and bring the war to Japan.

The Second World War came to an end officially in September 1945 with the detonation of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It is now up to Bikini to cope in the aftermath of the Second World War. The developers of the combination of bath two parts had not yet given a name. Soon they have a name for their outstanding creation.

Because of its remoteness from ordinary air and sea routes, Bikini Atoll was chosen to be the new nuclear proving ground for the government of the United States.
While Bikinians 167 were preparing for their exodus, preparations for nuclear testing program of the United States grew rapidly. Few people think the Bikinians were very interested in developing a nuclear bomb or two-piece bathing suit in 1946. Their interests were simply that of survival. They were faced with finding food, raising families and maintaining their culture. They could barely understand the evolution of events set in motion by the Cold War. Events that happened in Washington and Moscow were mostly beyond their control. The inhabitants of Bikini Atoll were not about to swimwear model, either.

The nuclear legacy of the Bikinians began in March 1946 when they were first removed from their islands in preparation for Operation Crossroads. Bikinians people's story from that day was a story of their struggle to exist in the midst of Cold War issues.

Operation Crossroads was an atmospheric nuclear weapon test series conducted in July 1946. The series consisted of two explosions, each with a yield of 23 kilotons. The two atomic bombings of Operation Crossroads were both about the size of the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. It was the first nuclear tests held in the Marshall Islands.

In preparation for Operation Crossroads, the Bikinians were sent east to 125 miles Rongerik Atoll. Within two months after their arrival on Rongerik, they began to beg U.S. officials to hand them over to Bikini.
